We recently hired Los Angeles Yacht Charter for a one-hour charter off the coast of LA for my mom’s burial at sea. From start to finish, the captain and crew struck the perfect balance between respect and lighthearted warmth. They were charming, attentive, and brought just the right amount of gentle humor to the experience, which made an emotional hour feel comforting and special for our family. Everything was handled professionally and with sincere care. We couldn't have asked for a better send-off for my mom, and we are so grateful to the team. Highly recommend.

Last week we had a burial at Sea. LA Charter at Marina del Rey staff were excellent. Dan and the Captain were friendly and very attentive with the family. Loved how they used a basket for the ashes and rose pedals and allowed us to participate in lowering the basket. Each member of the family also participated in scattering roses! It was beautifully organized and made us feel comfortable. I highly recommend this service with LA Charter!

Captain Mike and Crew Nicolas were the best on my Mom's Memorial at Sea. They knew how to be right off my mom's grandparents' house, where we lowered the basket. We were so pleased and happy, in a sad but celebratory way. And securing the boat, as well as advice on getting the burial license, were great and timely.

Nice yacht and Captain and his mate for the service. They were very helpful and explained the process. The boat was nice and they had cold bottled water some cookies and coffee waiting. We opted to have a bagpiper for our service and it was quite spectacular along with the spreading of the ashes with the roses. You would highly recommend this operation

Our family was looking at ways to scatter our parents’ cremated remains at sea, when I found Los Angeles Yacht Charter. While not inexpensive, their prices were reasonable and I was impressed with their professionalism and attention to detail. They have a lot of experience with Burials at Sea and were extremely helpful in guiding us through the process. The basket with rose petals used to scatter the ashes was a nice touch. The Captain and his Mate were extremely helpful in accommodating our requests to make the service more personal. Overall, the experience exceeded our expectations and everything was perfect. My highest recommendations!

Burial at Sea & Ash Scattering FAQs

What is the best time for scattering ashes at sea?
Morning departures can sometimes offer calmer conditions and may provide a peaceful setting for a burial at sea or ash scattering. Conditions on the water can vary by day, and afternoon or sunset services may also be available depending on the vessel and date.

Can I book a burial at sea, ash scattering or celebration of life any day of the week?
Yes. Burial at sea, ash scattering and celebration-of-life charters may be available seven days a week, depending on vessel availability. Weekends can book up earlier, so we recommend contacting us in advance if you have a specific date or time in mind.

How long does a burial at sea or ash scattering take?
The amount of time you need depends on the vessel, your group size and how you would like to plan the memorial. Consider how many guests may wish to speak, whether you plan to include music, prayers or other traditions, and whether you would like additional time together on the water. Charter lengths vary by vessel, and longer services allow more time for the ceremony, reflection and time with family and friends. How much does a burial at sea or ash scattering cost?
Pricing depends on the departure location, vessel, group size and length of the charter. Options range from smaller vessels for intimate gatherings to larger passenger vessels for bigger groups. You can compare current starting prices and capacities to find an option that works for your family. View all burial at sea vessels & pricing →

How far in advance should I book a burial at sea or ash scattering?
We recommend booking as early as possible if you have a specific date, departure location or vessel in mind. Weekends and popular dates can fill up sooner, while some services may be arranged on shorter notice when vessels are available. Your reservation is not confirmed until the required payment has been received and you have received confirmation from Los Angeles Yacht Charter.

Where are ashes scattered at sea?
The captain will take the vessel offshore to an appropriate location where the ash scattering can be conducted safely and in accordance with applicable requirements. The exact location may vary depending on the departure point, vessel, sea conditions and other operational considerations.

Can I bring an urn aboard?
Yes. Families may bring the cremated remains aboard in an urn or another suitable container. If you plan to place an urn or container into the ocean as part of the ceremony, please let us know in advance so we can confirm what is appropriate for your service and vessel.

What paperwork do I need for an ash scattering or burial at sea?
Los Angeles County requires a Disposition of Human Remains Permit for scattering cremated remains. The family or person responsible for the cremated remains should obtain the permit before the charter. It can generally be obtained from the crematory or the Los Angeles County Vital Records Office. What happens to ashes after they are scattered at sea?
After cremated remains are scattered, they disperse naturally in the ocean with the movement of the water and currents. Learn more about what happens to ashes scattered at sea →

Is a burial at sea the same as an ash scattering or celebration of life?
The terms are sometimes used interchangeably, but families may prefer different wording. “Ash scattering” usually refers specifically to scattering cremated remains at sea, while a “celebration of life” or “memorial at sea” may focus more broadly on gathering to remember and honor a loved one. We’re happy to use the terminology that feels most appropriate for your family and the service you are planning.

Are children included in the guest count?
Yes. Children and infants count toward the vessel’s total passenger capacity and must be included in your guest count. If your group includes infants or several young children, please let us know their ages when inquiring so we can confirm the vessel can accommodate your group and has the appropriate life jackets available.

Are food and drinks included on a burial at sea charter?
Food and beverage options vary by vessel and charter length. Some vessels allow you to bring your own food and drinks, while others offer catering, onboard bars or beverage packages. Certain vessels with licensed bars do not allow outside alcohol. Check the individual vessel details or ask us about the options available for your group.

What should I wear to a burial at sea or ash scattering?
There is no required dress code unless your family has chosen one for the memorial. Comfortable layers are recommended because it can be cooler and windier on the water than on land. Flat, secure shoes are strongly recommended, and high heels should be avoided, as the vessel can move while underway. A hat and sunglasses can also be helpful during daytime services.

Will I get seasick?
Seasickness varies from person to person and conditions on the water can change. Morning departures often offer calmer conditions, which may be helpful for guests who are concerned about motion sickness. If you or someone in your group is prone to seasickness, preparing in advance can help Learn how to prepare for and prevent seasickness →

Can we personalize an ash scattering or memorial at sea?
Yes. Families can personalize the memorial in many ways, including music, readings, prayers, flowers and meaningful traditions. Depending on availability, additional options such as a harpist, bagpiper or dove release may also be available. Explore ideas for customizing a burial at sea or memorial →

What happens to the urn or identification coin after the ash scattering?
After the scattering, the family is responsible for taking any urn, container, identification coin or other personal items with them when leaving the vessel. Items left aboard may be discarded and cannot be guaranteed to be retained or returned. Identification coins or tags may accompany cremated remains from a funeral home or crematory. Los Angeles Yacht Charter, the vessel operator, captain, crew and other staff do not independently verify that an identification number on a coin or tag corresponds to the cremated remains, urn or container provided for the service. Families are responsible for confirming this information with the funeral home or crematory before the service.

Who is responsible for the disposition during a burial at sea?
The family or person legally authorized to control the disposition remains responsible for the cremated remains and the ash scattering at all times. The family retains possession of the cremated remains and conducts the scattering during the charter. Los Angeles Yacht Charter, the vessel operator, captain, crew and other staff do not take possession of the cremated remains or assume responsibility for the disposition.

Is crew included with the yacht charter price?
Yes. The prices shown on our website include the crew needed for your charter. For certain luxury yachts operating under a bareboat charter arrangement, the booking documentation may include a separate crew agreement. This does not increase the advertised charter price unless additional services or charges are specifically disclosed to you.

The following information applies only to vessels operating under a bareboat charter arrangement and does not apply to every vessel available through Los Angeles Yacht Charter.
